How to use this moving checklist

You can follow this timeline whether you’re moving across town or relocating from out of state. Adjust dates based on your closing date and your moving company availability.

8–6 weeks before

  • Get quotes and reserve dates (popular dates fill up).
  • Start decluttering: donate/sell items you don’t want to move.
  • Begin a “moving binder” (receipts, contacts, notes).

4–3 weeks before

  • Start packing non-essentials (out-of-season items, décor).
  • Order packing supplies.
  • Confirm time off work if needed.
  • Identify utility providers and schedule start/stop dates (electric, water, internet).

2 weeks before

  • Change your address (USPS and key accounts).
  • Confirm mover/truck details and insurance.
  • Plan for pets and kids on moving day.

1 week before

  • Finish most packing and label boxes by room.

Moving day
